Erin was no longer herself. She was broken, to the point she didn’t know how to cry. Or how to breathe. She forced her eyes to look at Mia; her head moving in robotic motions. She’d forgotten how to form a sentence.
She felt as if she shouldn’t be acting this way. She’d always thought girls weak when they cried over boys. But now that logic just punched her in the face. Erin now understood, because this was the first time she’d been really heartbroken.
Her voice finally came back, but only to speak one word. “Why?” She asked, pursing her lips quickly after to keep from crying. She refused to cry. She wanted to beg Mia to stay, and consider talking it out. She wanted Mia to know… No. Stop it, Erin yelled at herself. Mia obviously didn’t feel the same way. She was leaving because she didn’t want Erin.
The first tears began to fall as she looked down at Erin’s broken expression. She herself looked as if she were going to cry. Mia didn’t want that; she never wanted to hurt her. But that was all she was going to do, wasn’t it? “I-I…” she stuttered for a moment, trailing off as she wiped away the tears from her cheeks. “I love you, Erin. And it scares the living hell out of me… And I can’t do this anymore.” Mia was being so mean; so selfish. She was leaving because she couldn’t handle her own feelings and couldn’t deal with her own problems. Erin deserved better than her anyway.
“I’m so terrified of the future, and what’s going on and going to happen and… I just can’t. In the past few months of I feel like I’ve lost myself and I’m just drowning in everything and you… You made it better. But it’s not enough. And now I can’t deal with this all anymore.” Her tears poured down her face like a flood as she slowly began to back away. “This is all too much for me, and it’s more than I can handle.” She needed to drop everything and take off running. Get as far and as fast away as possible. Maybe the farther she got, the less she would feel the pain in her chest.
“You deserve better than me anyhow.” A consolation statement. Meant to cushion the blow even slightly, and it was true. Erin was perfect; she deserved so much better than her. Mia was so screwed up. She shouldn’t have to deal with that as a girlfriend. “I’m so sorry. But I need to go… and I need to do it alone.” She made it to the doorway, ignoring the shaking in her hands as she reached out to grab it. Mia turned to look back at Erin one last time, her eyes a bit blurry from her crying. “Goodbye Erin.” and just like that, she was gone. She was out the door and took off running. Running down the halls of Erebus, out the dorm, and across the campus to Nyx. It was time to leave.

Erin moved over slightly to allow Mia in, but didn’t say anything. Her hands began to shake, and she quickly shoved them into her pockets to hide it. “I… What’s going on, Mia?”
She wanted to hug Mia. To comfort her. But Erin found herself unable to move. Her own emotions were taking control, mixed with Mia’s. Part of Erin could only know what was going on. Mia never liked sharing, or showing, her problems with Erin. Unless it possibly involved Erin. That thought itself made her heart sink even more.
“Just tell me.” Erin said flatly, her eyes shifting to the carpet. She felt too revealed. Too unsafe. Her whole demeanor began to crumble; shift.
Mia kept her gaze on the floor, her face falling ever further as she heard Erin speak. She needed to know now; she deserved to know the truth and without it being dragged out. Mia owed that to her. “I’m leaving Olympus. Tonight.” she spoke far too quietly, her voice threatening to shut down on her. She finally forced herself to look back up and meet Erin’s gaze. The tears began to brim in her eyes as she merely looked at her.
“I’ve got all of my bags packed and waiting for me in my room… I came to say goodbye.” Goodbye to the best thing that had ever happened to her, undoubtedly. Why did she have to be so afraid? Mia had lost herself, somehow, during everything that happened in the school year. She needed to get out; get away from it all. Hide away from everyone in the world. It seemed like all she could do. All that she knew how to do.

Erin was sprawled across her bed, reading the Hunger Games. She’d gotten quite into it since Mia had suggested it. Thankfully, Aurora had left the dorm and had turned the music off. It had woken her up unpleasantly, but Erin would never say that to Aurora. Music to some people was like reading to Erin.
A soft knock came from the door to the dormitory. Probably someone looking for Aurora, Erin thought blandly. She sprung up from the bed and made her way over. Something made her heart skip pause, as if she knew something was going to happen. Something bad, considering Erin could almost feel Rilla trying to leave her body.
Shaking her head, Erin reached for the doorknob and pulled it open. Mia stood in the hallway, but Erin made no move to get closer. Her eyes were a bit red, and her expression looked very conflicted. Erin’s heart began to pound. “Mia… What’s wrong?”
“Hey…” she spoke softly, staring down at Erin’s small frame. “Can I come in?” she asked, her voice almost squeaky sounding, even though it was barely audible. She stepped inside the room, staring down at her feet as she walked. She couldn’t bring herself to look back up into her girlfriend’s eyes. Not now.
She stayed silent for a long time, trying to compose herself. She was so scared; scared out of her mind. Mia didn’t know how to cope. So she was going to do the easiest thing there was that anyone could do. She was going to run away. Run from everything. From Olympus, Erin, and her life.

Don’t cry.
Mia commanded herself as she starred at the reflection in the mirror, her eyes already turning watery. She had to stay strong, even when she felt like her knees were about to collapse beneath her. Mia’s hands came up to her face, rubbing it gently in an attempt to calm herself. She couldn’t believe she was doing this, but she had to. Running was all she was good at after all, it seemed. Relationships were no different from the rest of it. She pulled her hair up into a tight ponytail as she steadied herself for what was to come. With a deep breath and shaking hand, she pulled open the dorm to her room and began to slowly make her way down the hallways of Nyx.
The distance from Nyx to Erebus had never seemed so short, even as she dragged her feet along the way. She didn’t want to do this. Yes she did. She had to do this. No she didn’t. The thoughts kept beating against her brain, causing her to grasp the sides of her head tightly as she squeezed her eyes shut. Mia didn’t want to be there; she wanted to be anywhere but there. That wasn’t the case, however. And she was still stuck there, standing outside of Erin’s dorm room, about to do something she would hate herself for forever. What was she doing? Running scared? That was exactly it. Her hand still shaking as she lifted it up, she slowly knocked on her door.
